How to Change Your Business Address on Google (and Edit Everything Else)

Quick answer: to change your business address on Google, sign in to the account that manages your profile, go to business.google.com, select Edit profile, then Location, and edit “Business location”. Hours, phone, services and more are in the same Edit profile menu. Edits usually show within 10 minutes, and moving after verification means verifying again.

We fix Google Business Profiles for a living. A holiday lighting company we worked with went from page 3 to the top 3 in Google Search in 30 days, and a lot of that work is the unglamorous kind on this page: getting every detail right and keeping it right.

Wrong details on Google cause what I call the Locked Door Stare. (That’s the face you make at a dark shop window after Google promised it was open, and yes, I’ve made it more often than a grown adult should admit.) Your customers make that face too, and then they make a different face at your competitor’s open door. So let’s keep your listing honest.

Where to edit each part of your Google Business Profile

Almost everything lives under Edit profile. Here’s where each piece hides, so you don’t have to click around like I do when I can’t find my glasses (they’re on my head).

How to edit your business listing on Google

You can edit from a computer or your phone, as long as you’re signed in to the Google Account linked to the profile. Signed in as your cousin who “helped set it up” in 2019 won’t work, as many cousins have discovered.

  • On a computer: go to business.google.com, open your profile, select Edit profile, make your change and select Save.
  • On your phone: open the Google Maps app, tap Business at the bottom right, tap Edit profile, make your change and tap Save.

If your profile isn’t verified yet, Google only lets you edit some details, such as the name, category and address. Our guide to Google My Business verification gets you the rest, which is a nicer afternoon than it sounds.

Everyday Google Business Profile edits like hours and phone, versus careful edits like business name and moving address
Everyday edits versus edits that need care, based on Google’s Business Profile help pages.

How to change your business address on Google

Four steps, and none of them involve a moving truck, thankfully.

  1. Go to your Business Profile and select Edit profile, then Location.
  2. Next to “Business location”, select Edit.
  3. Enter the new address. If Google can’t find it, fix the highlighted parts, or select Adjust to drag the pin to the right spot.
  4. Select Save.

Three things catch people out here. First, if you move after your profile is verified, Google says you must verify again, so plan the move for a week when you can answer the phone or film a video. Second, any verification code you requested for the old address won’t work for the new one. Third, if customers don’t visit you, turn off “Show business address to customers” and list your service area instead, because Google wants service-area businesses to hide the address (your living room is not a storefront, however nice the couch).

One more, from experience rather than Google’s help pages: update your website, Yelp and other listings to the new address the same week. That’s practitioner consensus, not documented Google behaviour, but matching details everywhere is cheap insurance, and it saves your customers the Locked Door Stare at your old building.

How to change your business hours on Google

Hours are the edit that matters most to customers and the one owners forget most, which is a terrible combination, like a smoke alarm with a nap button.

  • Regular hours: Edit profile, then Hours. Set your main hours and save.
  • Holiday and event hours: Edit profile, Hours, then the edit icon next to Special hours. Your main hours must be set for special hours to show.
  • Longer closures: special hours cover closures of up to 6 days in a row. Any longer and Google recommends marking the business temporarily closed.

Set holiday hours a few weeks early, not on Christmas Eve from your phone in a parking lot. I’m not saying who does that, but he wrote this page.

How to add services to your Google Business Profile

Services tell Google, and customers, exactly what you do. Google suggests services based on your category, and you can add your own, which is great news for anyone whose real service is “fixing what the last guy did”.

  1. Open your profile and select Edit services.
  2. Tick the suggested services you offer, or select Add custom service.
  3. Select a service to add a price or description, then save.

Google automatically rejects custom services that break its rules, so keep prices, phone numbers and personal information out of service names. The services editor isn’t available for every business type, and food and drink businesses get a menu editor instead.

How to add a manager to your Google Business Profile

Adding a manager is the right way to let an employee or agency help. Handing over your Google password is the wrong way, and also how people end up locked out of their own business.

  1. Go to your profile at business.google.com.
  2. Select the menu, then Business Profile settings, then People and access.
  3. Select Add, enter their email, choose Owner or Manager, and select Invite.

Managers can do nearly everything owners can, except add or remove people or remove the profile. A profile can have several owners but only one primary owner, and someone has to be an owner or manager for 7 days before they can be made primary owner.

Why your Google Business Profile edit isn’t showing

“We review your changes before we update them live on your profile.”

Google Business Profile Help

Every edit goes through a review, and Google says it usually takes up to 10 minutes, but sometimes up to 30 days. Thirty days is a long time to stare at a screen, so please don’t. (I’ve tried, and the screen won.)

  • Pending: still under review.
  • Accepted: the new info is live on your profile.
  • Not approved: Google couldn’t confirm the change was accurate. You might be able to appeal it.

If edits keep getting rejected, or your profile has been suspended, our guide on a suspended Google Business Profile covers what to fix before you appeal.

What we’d do this week if it were our profile

  1. Search the business on Google from a phone, signed out, and read the profile like a customer would.
  2. Check the hours, phone, website and address against reality, one line at a time.
  3. Add the next three holidays to Special hours now.
  4. Make sure every service we actually sell is listed, and nothing we don’t.
  5. Add a second owner or manager, so one lost password never locks the business out.

Fifteen minutes, once a quarter. That’s the whole cure for the Locked Door Stare, and it’s cheaper than the coffee you’ll drink while doing it.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Google Business Profile edits take to show?

Google reviews every edit first. It usually takes up to 10 minutes, and sometimes up to 30 days.

Do I need to verify my profile before I can edit it?

To edit everything, yes. Unverified profiles can still edit some details, such as the business name, category and address.

Will changing my address affect my Google ranking?

Google doesn’t publish how a move affects ranking. It does say local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and a new address changes your distance to the people searching.

Can a manager change the business address?

Yes. Managers can edit the profile’s information. They can’t add or remove users or remove the profile, which only owners can do.

Can I edit my Google Business Profile from my phone?

Yes. In the Google Maps app, tap Business at the bottom right, then Edit profile. Some features differ between Search, Maps and your device.
